Located on a five-acre site, the new Yawkey Sports Training Center is a state-of-the-art complex built for the Special Olympics Massachusetts. This new, 25,000 sf headquarters features 4,000 sf of flexible classroom space, which doubles as a banquet venue to support fundraising, as well as fields for athlete training and competition. The facility also includes offices, conference rooms, a gymnasium, staff lounge/cafe, and administrative support areas.
The design includes a processional walkway leading to a plaza containing a “Hall of Fame”, which introduces visitors to the unique nature of this facility. As one enters the lobby, images and interactive displays reinforce the educational aspects of the organization.
Extensive site work was also required to construct the multi-purpose training field. Considerations were made for adjacent wetlands, including building up fields with loam, the implementation of a storm water prevention plan, and water conservation plan.
